Methane Emissions Reduction
Save your facility money while reaching methane emission reduction goals.
The Methane Emissions Reduction program is closed.
All pre-approved Methane Emissions Reduction program applications will continue to be processed for payment. Applications that have not been pre-approved, will not be approved and there is no waitlist.

Below are program details that may be helpful for those who have already submitted applications or are interested in learning more about how the program worked.
Incentives cover Direct to Capital (DTC) studies to identify and quantify Methane Emissions Reduction (MER) eligible capital projects as well as DTC Projects that implement capital-based projects that reduce methane emissions and associated CO2e.
Methane Emissions Reduction (MER) helps oil and gas facilities in Alberta to identify, reduce, improve or eliminate methane waste through a collection of quick implementation measures and equipment upgrades. Methane emissions not only make a large impact on climate change; they also lead to shorter equipment life, higher operating costs and lower production costs. Our program helps to pinpoint and resolve problem areas, which saves your facility money and helps Alberta reach its methane reduction and compliance goals.
The MER initiative has a variety of measures and improvements to help your facility reduce methane emissions and stay on track for emission compliance.
Facilities that have already identified emission reduction measures can proceed with MER Direct to Capital (DTC) Applications. DTC Applications are initiated by a program ally or a facility owner as a single application that consists of two components: DTC Studies and DTC Projects. Both DTC Studies and DTC Projects are mandatory.
DTC Applications (consisting of Studies & Projects component) provide incentives to identify, quantify and implement MER eligible capital projects that reduce methane emissions and associated CO2e. Potential DTC Projects MERs include:
- Wellhead casing seal
- Test and repair pressure safety valves
- Glycol dehydration system: reduce circulation rate and energy exchange pumps to electric
- Vapour Recovery Unit (VRU)
- Pneumatic injection pumps to solar or grid
- Air/fuel ratio controls
- Vent gas capture
- Pneumatic to electric (grid, solar, fuel cell) retrofit
- Pneumatic (fuel gas) to instrument air conversion
- Compressor seal retrofits
