Consumer protection Steps you can take to protect yourself as a consumer

For more information on how to protect yourself, visit our Consumer Protection page. Some contractors require a business license and some work requires a permit. Before you start working with your contractor, you should ensure that your selected contractor holds a business license if required by the municipality where work is taking place. For more information please visit:

To avoid scams while working with contractors, consumers should:

  • Always insist on a written contract.
  • Check references – other satisfied customers are a great sign.
  • Get more than one quote from different service providers if possible.

If you have questions or concerns:

  • Please note that most business to business transactions are not subject to consumer protection legislation. For more information visit servicealberta.ca.

If you are a product or service provider and you are unsure of the licensing and permit requirements you may find more information through Service Alberta BizPaL Online Business Permits and Licenses.
