Our History
Energy Efficiency Alberta’s short history has led to incredible results for Albertans.
November 2015 | Climate Leadership Plan Toggle content
Released in late 2015, Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan commits to reinvest all revenue from the carbon levy into Alberta’s economy, including into energy efficiency. Investment in energy efficiency and community energy system programs will help reduce energy use and associated costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and support green jobs.
June 2016 | Energy Efficiency Advisory Panel Established Toggle content
The Alberta Energy Efficiency Advisory Panel is established. It helps set out a long-term vision for energy efficiency in Alberta and recommend the types of energy-savings programs needed for the short- and medium-term.
July - September 2016 | Stakeholder Engagement Toggle content
The Energy Efficiency Advisory Panel met with Albertans, Indigenous communities, local governments, and stakeholders to determine the types of programs that a new provincial agency could deliver in early 2017. The focus was on programs and opportunities for consumers, businesses and communities.
Public Engagement (Online and Community)
The panel held five open houses in Medicine Hat, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie, attended by approximately 500 people, as well as a separate youth and educator engagement session which included teachers, students, school board trustees, non-governmental organizations, not-for-profit organizations and the private sector.
Indigenous Communities Engagement
The panel held six sessions with Indigenous communities in Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Calgary, Grande Prairie, Maskwacis and Enoch Cree Nation. The panel also received a submission from the Métis Nation of Alberta, and panel members participated in conferences hosted by the Assembly of First Nations and the Technical Services Advisory Group to provide information on the engagement process.
Technical Engagement
Three full-day technical sessions attended by private and public stakeholders, think tanks and industry organizations, giving them an opportunity to share perspectives about buildings, program design and implementation, and community energy systems; Municipal sessions attended by 41 municipal representatives brought in municipal perspectives, and six municipalities presented overviews of their own energy efficiency and community energy systems.
January 2017 | Panel Advise to Minister Responsible for The Climate Change Office Toggle content
Getting It Right: A More Energy Efficient Alberta—the panel’s final report—was released in January 2017 and included a recommendation to launch the following programs:
- Residential Direct Install
- Consumer Products
- Business, Non-Profit, Institution Incentives
- Small Solar PV
January 2017 | Program Design Toggle content
A consultant, Dunsky Energy Consulting, designed an initial suite of programs with estimates of costs and GHG emissions reductions.

January 2017 | Energy Efficiency Alberta Established Toggle content
Energy Efficiency Alberta is established and the government prepared programs for Albertans. Multiple Requests for Proposals are offered through the Alberta Purchasing Connection.
Spring 2017 | Initial Programs Launched Toggle content
The initial programs of Energy Efficiency Alberta are launched throughout the spring of 2017, based on the recommendations of the Alberta Energy Efficiency Advisory Panel’s final report, Getting It Right: A More Energy Efficient Alberta.
The government launches four initial programs to Albertans.
Spring 2018 | New Programs Launched Toggle content
Based on research and the input of Albertans, Energy Efficiency Alberta released two new programs to help Albertans save money and energy.
Energy Efficiency Alberta launches the following programs in Spring 2018.
- Custom Energy Solutions
- Indigenous Green Loan Guarantee (Now Green Loan Guarantee Program).
