Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program Surpasses Expectations; Now Fully Subscribed

When I joined Energy Efficiency Alberta only eight months ago, the agency had already launched its first program – The Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program. Participation in all of our programs has been enthusiastic, but no other program has demonstrated Albertans’ desire for energy efficiency more than the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program.

This program was designed to introduce Albertans to energy efficiency and act as a springboard for our other programs, and it’s done just that. As we’d hoped, a critical mass of Albertans have signed up for the program – some 12 per cent of all single-family households – and energy-efficient products are being installed in homes across this province. These installations have piqued interest in our other programs, particularly our instant savings, online rebates and home improvement programs.

Based on North American comparisons and provincial considerations, it was estimated that 70,000 Alberta households would participate in the one-year program, but we passed that number long ago. As of today, just over 150,000 Alberta households have registered for the program, and we’ve had an average of 200 Albertans registering daily.

The program has surpassed all expectations for participation, energy savings, and greenhouse gas reductions. It’s met its objectives, so we are now closing registration for this program, effective immediately.

All Albertans who registered for the program will be addressed by summer 2018. We continue to contact registrants to schedule installations, and anyone who hasn’t been scheduled yet will be contacted shortly. We understand that installations haven’t happened as fast as people would like, but the pace is picking up now. We’ve hired more installers, improved our scheduling process, and the program call centre is operating evenings and weekends

As of today, 37,000 installations are complete, or about 25 per cent of total registrations. When installations for all 150,000 registrants are complete, this will equate to Albertans saving 700,000 gigajoules of energy annually, and a reduction of more than 20,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of taking 8,000 cars off Alberta roads, or enough energy for 5,800 homes. Participating Albertans will have also saved almost 3 million litres of water, enough to fill 1,000 Olympic swimming pools.

I want to thank all Albertans who have decided to participate in energy efficiency, through our programs or through their own efforts. Energy Efficiency Alberta is as committed as ever to fulfilling our mandate and increasing energy efficiency and small-scale renewable generation across the province. In the coming months we’ll be refining our current programs and launching new ones, all designed to deliver energy savings to Albertans.
